Tummy Tucka flatter, firmer midsection
A flat, toned stomach is one of the hardest results to recover after pregnancy or major weight change, and diet and exercise cannot tighten loose skin or reconnect separated muscle. A tummy tuck removes surplus fat and sagging skin from the abdomen and, in most cases, repairs the muscle wall for a firmer, smoother profile.

What a Tummy Tuck Actually Addresses
Abdominoplasty, the medical name for a tummy tuck, treats two problems that tend to arrive together. The first is excess skin and fat across the lower belly that no amount of core work will flatten, often left behind by pregnancy or significant weight loss. The second is separation of the vertical abdominal muscles, a condition called diastasis recti, where the muscles that once met in the middle have pulled apart and left the belly protruding.
During surgery, Dr. Roudner removes the loose skin and fat and, when the muscles have separated, stitches them back into position to rebuild a firm abdominal wall. That muscle repair is the part sit-ups cannot reach, and it is often the difference between a stomach that simply looks slimmer and one that feels tight and supported again.
“A tummy tuck is as much about the muscle wall underneath as the skin on top, and getting both right is what makes the result look natural rather than merely tighter.”
Am I a Good Candidate?
The best candidates are healthy adults at or near a stable weight who are bothered by loose abdominal skin, stubborn lower-belly fullness, or a midsection that stays soft and protruding despite consistent effort. Many are mothers whose bodies changed with pregnancy, and many have lost a substantial amount of weight and are left with skin that will not shrink back.
Timing matters. If you are planning future pregnancies, it is usually wise to wait, since carrying another child can undo a muscle repair. The same is true if you intend to lose a large amount of weight, which is best done before surgery rather than after. Non-smokers, or those willing to stop well before and after the procedure, tend to heal more reliably. None of this is a checklist you pass or fail on your own. In a private consultation, Dr. Lenny will look at your health, your goals, and your anatomy and tell you candidly whether a tummy tuck is the right move or whether something less involved would serve you better.
How Dr. Lenny Approaches the Procedure
Dr. Roudner has been operating in Coral Gables since he founded the Aesthetic Surgery Center in 1989, and his reputation rests on natural, proportional results and an unhurried, personal manner. That philosophy carries into body work as much as the breast surgery he is best known for. The aim is a stomach that looks like it belongs to you, flatter and firmer without appearing pulled or artificial.
Planning around your body
No two abdomens are the same, so the plan is built around yours. In your consultation Dr. Lenny assesses how much loose skin there is, whether the muscles have separated and by how much, where fat is concentrated, and where a scar can sit low enough to hide beneath underwear or a swimsuit. He will explain what a full tummy tuck involves versus a more limited approach for patients whose looseness is confined to the area below the navel, and he will be straight with you about what the operation can and cannot change.
The Procedure and Anesthesia
A tummy tuck is performed under anesthesia, with the specific type reviewed and decided with you beforehand based on your health and the extent of the work. Dr. Roudner makes a horizontal incision low across the lower abdomen, positioned so the resulting scar can be concealed by clothing. Through that incision he tightens separated muscle, removes excess skin and fat, and, when needed, repositions the navel so it sits naturally on the flatter contour.
How long surgery takes depends on how much correction is involved and whether it is combined with liposuction or other procedures. When the work is complete, the incisions are closed and dressed, a compression garment is applied to support the abdomen, and in most cases a small drain is placed beneath the skin to clear fluid as you heal. You will go home with clear, written instructions rather than guesswork.
Recovery and the Results to Expect
Expect the first week or two to be the most restrictive. Swelling, tightness, bruising, and soreness are normal and managed with medication, and the compression garment stays on to limit swelling and support the repair. You will walk slightly bent at first and should avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting until Dr. Roudner clears you. Most patients arrange time away from work and help at home for the early days, then return to light routines within a few weeks and to fuller activity gradually over the weeks that follow. Your exact timeline depends on your body and the extent of surgery, and Dr. Lenny sets those expectations with you directly.
The results are considered long-lasting. Once the swelling settles over the weeks and months that follow, the abdomen looks flatter and feels firmer, and the muscle repair restores tone that exercise alone could not. Substantial weight gain or a later pregnancy can diminish the outcome, which is why timing the surgery well is part of getting a result that holds. The scar is permanent but placed low, and it fades over time.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?
Liposuction removes fat to refine a contour, but it does nothing for loose skin or separated muscle. A tummy tuck removes excess skin, tightens the abdominal wall, and can be combined with liposuction for a fuller reshaping. In your consultation Dr. Lenny will explain which approach, or which combination, fits your body.
Will a tummy tuck repair my separated muscles?
In most cases, yes. When pregnancy or weight change has pulled the vertical abdominal muscles apart, Dr. Roudner stitches them back together to rebuild a firm wall. That muscle repair is the part core exercises cannot fix, and it is often the reason the stomach stays soft despite effort.
How noticeable will the scar be?
A tummy tuck leaves a horizontal scar across the lower abdomen. Dr. Roudner places it low so it can be hidden beneath underwear or a swimsuit, and like any scar it fades over time. He will show you where the incision is likely to sit during your consultation.
Should I wait until after having children?
Usually, yes. A future pregnancy can stretch the skin again and undo the muscle repair, so if you are planning more children it is generally best to postpone. Dr. Lenny will talk through your plans and help you decide on timing.
Do I need to lose weight before the procedure?
If you intend to lose a significant amount of weight, it is best to do so before surgery, since major weight change afterward can affect the result. The best candidates are at or near a stable weight. Dr. Roudner will assess this with you at your consultation.
What kind of anesthesia is used and how long does surgery take?
A tummy tuck is done under anesthesia, and the specific type is decided with you based on your health and the extent of the work. The length varies with how much correction is involved and whether it is combined with other procedures. Both are reviewed with you before the day of surgery.
