The Procedure and Anesthesia

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia in a sterile surgical setting. When only a small amount of tissue is being removed, the horizontal incision may not be needed.

In most reductions the nipple and areola stay attached to the underlying tissue, which helps preserve sensation and blood supply. After surgery the breasts are wrapped in gauze. Dr. Roudner does not use drains, and he may prescribe antibiotics and pain medication for comfort. Most patients take it easy for the first week or two and ease back into normal activity over the following weeks, with heavier exercise added later once he clears you.
