Who Is a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

The clearest answer comes from a consultation, but there are honest signs that breast augmentation is worth exploring. Good health, realistic goals, and a decision made for yourself matter more than any single measurement.

What Makes a Good Candidate

A good candidate is in good overall health. Most surgeons ask for a physical examination beforehand, since preexisting conditions raise the risk of complications and, for a small number of patients, the risks can outweigh the benefits. Just as important is mindset: realistic expectations about how you’ll look, and a decision made for your own reasons rather than to satisfy anyone else. Augmentation can change your shape, but it isn’t a fix for self-esteem, the patients who are happiest are the ones who wanted it for themselves.

Common Reasons Patients Choose Augmentation

Beyond health and readiness, most patients arrive with one of a few familiar goals. Any of these is reason enough to look into the procedure:

Restore Volume

Re-plump a bust line softened by pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss.

Correct Asymmetry

Even out breasts that differ in size, something a single implant alone can’t resolve.

Add Size and Shape

Increase fullness in a natural way that suits your overall frame.

Reconstruction & Renewal

Rebuild shape and confidence after a mastectomy, with a look and feel close to natural.

Age and Timing

Age matters, and so does timing. The FDA sets 22 as the minimum age for silicone gel implants. More broadly, augmentation isn’t performed before 18, while the breast tissue is still developing. Pregnancy and nursing also change the breasts, so it’s best to wait until you are past both before considering surgery.

Who Else May Qualify

Candidacy isn’t limited to a first-time size increase. Dr. Lenny regularly sees patients who qualify for other reasons:

Replacing Saline

Former saline-implant patients moving to silicone for its look and feel.

Lift With Augmentation

Patients combining a breast lift with an implant in a single procedure.

Irregular Chest Wall

Those with an irregularly shaped breast or chest wall to address.

After Mastectomy

Women rebuilding after a mastectomy who want to regain their figure.

Finding Out for Certain

You’ll usually know the same day you come in. At your consultation, Dr. Roudner reviews your medical history, talks through the outcome you’re hoping for, and walks you through the risks involved, honestly and without pressure. The visit is complimentary, and it’s the surest way to learn whether augmentation is right for you. Call 305-444-8585 to arrange one.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an age requirement for breast augmentation?

Yes. The FDA sets 22 as the minimum age for silicone gel implants, and augmentation isn’t performed before 18, while the breast tissue is still developing.

Can I have breast augmentation while pregnant or breastfeeding?

No. Pregnancy and nursing both change the breast tissue, so it’s best to wait until you are past both before planning surgery.

How soon will I know if I’m a candidate?

Usually the same day. During your consultation, Dr. Roudner reviews your health history and your goals, discusses the risks, and tells you whether augmentation makes sense for you.

Does insurance cover breast augmentation?

Cosmetic augmentation is usually not covered by health insurance and is paid out of pocket. You’ll receive transparent pricing during your consultation.
