What is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift is a plastic surgery procedure that restores sagging breasts back to their youthful and perky appearance. It can also help breasts look more symmetrical. By improving the proportions and lifting the breasts, patients will feel more attractive and experience less discomfort with their breasts. To lift the breasts, our plastic surgeon removes the excess and stretched out skin, reshapes the breast tissue as well as raises the areola and nipple into a forward position. Dr. Roudner can also reshape large and stretched areolae for more natural looking breasts.

Top Reasons to Consider a Breast Lift

There are lots of different reasons that patients consider breast lifts. Among the top reasons is to restore their breasts back to their original shape after breastfeeding and pregnancy. As beautiful as pregnancy can be, it can cause some unwanted changes to occur in the body. Among these includes stretching out the breasts and causing them to sag. With a breast lift and combination of implants, if you choose, Dr. Roudner can restore your breasts after pregnancy.

Another reason patients consider breast lifts is to improve the shape of their breasts following significant weight loss. When you lose a significant amount of weight, this can not only cause your skin around your body to stretch and sag but your breasts. This is because you lose fat all over your body, especially your breasts. When you choose a breast lift, our plastic surgeon can help remove the excess skin that is causing your breasts to sag. This will help you look younger and feel confident in that body you worked so hard to get!

The last reason someone might consider receiving a breast lift is that they want to enjoy breasts that are perky shape for the first time. It’s not uncommon for some patients to have droopy breasts since their teenage years. With a breast lift, all patients can receive the breast profile they have always desired to have.

Do I Need a Breast Lift?

There are a lot of different reasons one might think that they need a breast lift. Of course, the only real way to confirm if you need a breast lift is by scheduling a consultation with our Miami plastic surgeon. If you’re not sure if you should make the call, here are the most common reasons that patients visit us for breast lifts.

Your Nipples Point Downwards – When your skin begins to sag at the base, the weight of your breast tissue can force the nipples downward. With a breast lift, your breasts will be repositioned to face forward.

Your Nipples/Areola Sit Below the Crease Under Your Breasts – When determining if a patient is a candidate for a breast lift, one of the first things we look for is the position of the nipples and areola. If your nipples hang below the crease of your breasts, you’re most likely a great candidate for a breast lift. You can test this by placing a sheet of paper on the crease. If you see that your nipples hang below that line, a breast lift can benefit you.

You’re Unhappy With Your Breast Size When Wearing a Bra – Although a breast lift will not give you larger breasts, it will make your breasts look rounder and fuller. This will allow you to fit better into bras. If you’re unhappy with the size of your breasts, whether too large or too small, we can also perform a breast augmentation or breast reduction with the breast lift.

Your Breasts are Unusually Shaped or Asymmetrical – With a breast lift comes reshaping of your breast tissue. If you have unusually shaped or asymmetrical shaped breasts, our plastic surgeon can fix this during your breast lift surgery. He uses different techniques to give you a more normal and round breast shape.

Types of Breast Lifts

There are four different breast lift procedures out there. Depending on your plastic surgeon’s preference will determine which one you receive. Dr. Roudner will discuss your options based on your personal needs during your consultation. In the meantime, learn more about the different breast lift procedures.

Crescent Lift – Minimal Sagging

The crescent lift is known for its minimal scarring and is typically used to correct minimal sagging. Dr. Roudner will make a small incision around the top half of your areola’s edge in order to complete this procedure. In most cases, this type of breast lift is only used while also performing a breast augmentation.

Donut Lift – Mild Sagging with Single Scar

The donut lift is used to correct mild sagging with only one scar. It’s also known as a Peri-Areolar breast lift. This procedure makes a circular incision around the areola to complete the lift. It’s also used most commonly in conjunction with a breast augmentation. This type of breast lift can also be used to reduce the size of the areola. Scars trace the edge of the areola so they are not noticeable.

Lollipop Lift – Moderate Sagging with Reshaping

Also known as the vertical breast lift, the Lollipop breast lift is one of the most commonly used techniques and is used to help breasts that have moderate sagging that also need reshaping. The incisions are made one around the areola and the other that runs vertically from the inframammary fold to the areola. This creates a lollipop shape. This technique removes excess skin and reshapes the breasts with minimal scarring.

Anchor Lift – Extensive Sagging & Dramatic Reshaping

If you have an excessive amount of sagging, an anchor lift, or inverted T breast lift will be the right option for you. With this technique, the surgeon removes the significant amount of sagging breast tissue and skin. There are three incisions made for this procedure. There is one around the areola, another vertical one from the areola to the breast crease, and one last one in the inframammary fold. Your plastic surgeon will most likely use this technique if you are also completing a breast reduction in addition. Although the anchor lift comes with visible scars, they can easily be hidden and will fade over time.

When it comes to breast lift surgery, there are a few requirements that you will need in order to be a good candidate for the surgery. The requirements include:

  • Not a smoker
  • You are not happy with your sagging breasts, or their shape
  • Your breasts are pendulous or have a flatter and elongated shape
  • Your nipples rest below the breast crease without support
  • You have areolas and nipples that point downwards
  • One of your breasts is lower than the other
  • You have enlarged areolas or stretched skin

Breast Lift Surgery Overview

Now that you know about the different breast lift surgeries and who is a good candidate for the procedures, it’s time to learn about the actual surgery itself. Once the date is set, you will meet Dr. Roudner at the surgery site. The first step will include anesthesia. This is the medication used to make you go to sleep during your surgery and will provide you with the most optimal comfort.

The next step in your breast lift surgery is the incisions. This is where Dr. Roudner will make the necessary incisions based on which type of breast lift technique he is performing. After the incisions are cut, he will lift the underlying breast tissue and begin to reshape it to improve the firmness and contour. Next, he will reposition the nipple and areola to their natural and youthful height. If you have enlarged areolas, Dr. Roudner will reduce the size of them at this time by removing skin at their perimeter. Lastly, he removes the excess breast skin. From there, he will close the incisions which will then finish tightening the skin up. He will make an effort to make your scars in unnoticeable places so you don’t have to worry about having unattractive scars following surgery.

Recovering from Breast Lift Surgery

Once your surgery is complete, our plastic surgery team will apply bandages and dressings to the incisions. We then give you a support bra or elastic bandage to wear to minimize swelling as well as support your breasts while they heal. Some patients may also have a thin tube that is temporarily placed under the skin of the surgical site to drain any excess fluid or blood from the surgery.

During this time, we will teach you how to care for your breasts while they heal. We will also educate you about the different medications you will take to aid in the healing and to prevent infection from occurring. Next, we will let you know what specific concerns to look out for that may be a sign of harm to your healing or overall health. Lastly, we will let you know when to come in for a follow-up with Dr. Roudner.

Before your surgery, it’s always good to ask Dr. Roudner about the healing process and everything you think you need to know about your surgery. We will do our best to provide you with all the information you might need for a stress-free breast lift in Miami.
