What is a Breast Augmentation?
A breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to increase or restore a woman’s breast size using saline implants, silicone gel implants (including Gummy Bear). Anesthesia:

Usually, general anesthesia is the preferred method; however, on occasion, a patient receives intravenous sedation or local anesthesia during her breast augmentation.
Breast Augmentation – The Procedure
1. After the anesthesia takes effect, Dr. Lenny begins the breast augmentation surgery by creating a pocket for the breast implant.
Dr. Lenny makes this incision in one of four areas:
- (Transaxillary) In the axilla (armpit)
- (Inframammary) Just above the crease beneath the breast
- (Transumbilical) In the navel
- (Periareolar) Around the base of the areola
2. Once the incision is made, Dr. Lenny gently lifts the breast tissue to create a pocket. Breast implant placement may be above or below the pectoral muscle.
3. The breast implant is placed within this newly created pocket. The type of implant (silicone, saline or gummy bear) and the size of the implant is determined by Dr. Lenny and the patient prior to the breast augmentation procedure.
4. Following placement of both breast implants and before closing the incisions, Dr. Lenny will make sure that the implants are symmetrical.
5. Dr. Lenny closes the incisions using stitches, glue or tape (or a combination of the three).
Directly Following Breast Augmentation Surgery
Keeping the chest area supported assists with the healing process; for this reason, Dr. Lenny usually wraps the chest area with gauze bandages and/or provides her with a surgical compression garment/bra.
Some patients will have drainage tubes for a short time after their breast augmentation surgery with Dr. Lenny in Coral Gables.
Recovery Following Breast Augmentation in Coral Gables – What to Expect
Patients should expect to experience pain following their breast augmentation; however, as each day passes, the pain typically decreases. Dr. Lenny will provide patients with, or recommend, medications to treat pain following a breast augmentation in Coral Gables.
Other symptoms that patients should expect following a breast augmentation:
- Breasts may be sensitive to the touch, feel itchy, warm and tight.
- The initial discoloration, redness, and swelling should resolve rather quickly; however, for most patients, the majority of any residual swelling resolves within about a month.
After a breast augmentation, Dr. Lenny provides each patient with instructions to follow. These instructions may include activity restrictions, caring for drainage tubes and wearing compression garments. Before the patient leaves the office, her follow-up visit may be scheduled.
